Hello my name is Valencia but you can call me V. After years of damaging my hair, I knew there had to be a better way. So I decided to take the path to go natual and lock up. I was Sisterlcoked from June 2006 until Sept 2010 (4yrs). In which during that time I truly enjoyed my hair freedom. Unfortunately my journey had to come to end due to post partum hair loss. I have recently started a new journey this past September, and looking forward to all the ups and downs. As a new Sisterlocks™ Consultant I want to give women and men that same freedom.

Guess who decided to join the locked family? Again?

Hello all, my husband finally decided to join the locked family! (For now anyways). Being that he was the one to encourage me to get locks from the beginning, you would think that he would be the first to get locked, however that was not the case! At first we were going to try to get locked at the same time but my locked date was so set so far in advance that he didn't want to wait because he was getting tired of all his hair! So he asked me to do it, at first I didn't want to do it because I never locked or did anyone's hair and plus I knew I wasn't good at parting but he insisted so I gave in and twisted his hair. I think I did good for the first time however I didn't care for the parts I thought they were ugly and I some how gave him what he calls a Jesus part( big part going down the middle). He claimed that the parts didn't bother him, so if he was happy I was happy. Eventually due to his dry and flaky scalp and extreme itching he gave in and washed his hair. (He is used to washing his hair everyday) So not washing his hair was a big problem. Sorry and I'm glad I don't have any pics of his first attempt! Through the months he decided that he wanted to attempt to lock his hair again however he was let down 3 different times so he figured getting his hair locked was not meant to be and cut his hair!

As a few more months went by he really loved the progress of my hair and he wanted to try to lock his hair again. So I was doing some research and trying to figure out the best method for him. Obviously latching his hair or even starting out with braids was the best idea because he would be able to wash his hair. However his hair wasn't long enough at the time and he was anxious again so I used the traditional method, I think I did a much better job than the first time and this time didn't take as long. However I still wasn't that great with the parts but compared to last time this time it looks better and there is no Jesus part. (lol)

Anyhow I'm having doubts about him because I think he will give in and wash it out due to major itching and flaking! So as of now I'm seeking major advice on what products help with those issues! Also if he does or does not give in I really want to learn how to latch his locks even if I have to start them over I don't mind because He has to do what works for him. Although I wanted him to go to a professional at first it does feels good to be 100% apart of his journey! I'm interested in the nappylock tool and the latch hook however the nappylock tool looks easier to use. So if there is anyone out there who can suggest to me which tool is better and maybe give me some pointers on how to latch that would be appreciated, or even gear me in the right direction which method is best. I want to invest in the napplock tool in a box. I want to know is it worth it and are their instructions very easy to use(clear) and understand? Also if I can't get this latching thing down and he last long enough for me to retwist his hair again which products are the best for retwisting and don't leave a lot of build up? Well I'll be patiently waiting and hoping that many of you read this blog and give me some good advice.

I posted a few pics. I noticed that the locks on the bottom row are going to cause trouble because they are short and the ones that always get wet when you take a shower so hopefully I will learn to latch soon!

Anyhow i have approached 7 months and I will post pics and updates soon!

Wow! You did a great job on those parts. I hope he sticks with it.

I am not a hairdresser, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I think tool-assisted-locks are easier to start if you wash your hair a lot.

Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' 'bout. I wanted that so bad when I started. Went to a "beau"tician who said she knew how to start locks and got the "your hair is so soft" story.

Lookin' good! ;-)

Just saw your query: "Well I'll be patiently waiting and hoping that many of you read this blog and give me some good advice."

I strongly advise both of you to seek solice with others who have experienced the road about to be traveled. Join one of the Yahoo lock groups for comraderie. Meanwhile I do suggest he/you wash as often as possible, necessary, and at will. Nothin' worse than nasty hair, and it simply ain't necessary.

When washing becomes necessary (and it will), simply retwist (until you get the latching. Claim it, it's not about "if you don't get it". Cherie King has a wonderful web book about latching that is reasonably priced.

As far as what to use for re-twisting, I would say depends upon the hair. I use anything I wanna, i.e., beeswax because I have soft, wavy hair. If the hair is course, try aloe vera juice - it's natural and washes out. You do not want to put anything in locks that will not/can not come out.

Sistalocd you've done a wonderful job. I take my hat off to you!

On the itchy scalp front - this has been something of a problem for me since my SL installation. Following advice from the lockitup group I was spritzing with Apple Cider Vinegar. Due to the smell I decided to look at other options. I am now using a combination of Witch Hazel and Tea Tree Oil. I have used the the WH/TTO combo on myself using a cotton bud to go through the parts and on my SO's extremely short hair with cotton wool. I also made a spritz of water and Tea Tree Oil which makes my hair and scalp feel fresh.

I initially started (Jan 06) with comb coils like your husband. Like him after about three weeks I couldn't take the flakiness from the gel and what I considered the ugliness and I wasn't supposed to wash it for 6 months too and she didn't schedule me for retightnings or recoilins. Plus the person charged me $150 too! I went to the bathroom and washed those suckas out. Then I stalked Sisterlocks blogss and decided to take the plunge Mar 06. Just think if I could've held out this month would be my anniversary. But we all know what we like and don't and I don't regret startin over. I agree with Brunsli he may want to or maybe you can quickly start using a tool to assist his locks.

Thanks to all of you for your compliments and replies
I will take and consider your advice. I am having doubts though becuase his scalp is itching so bad already, that it woke him up out of sleep. I just might have to talk him into doing the latching method. I just wish that I could get it down. I understand the latching concept and I am pretty sure I can do it with my hands just not really sure how to use the tool(s). Anyhow thanks again!

It looks to me like you've got the "hair gift." I think you'll easily get the hang of any tool you choose to use. I myself am partial to the nappylocks tool, but do what works for you.

Hey Sistalocd - You did a great job on Hubby's locks! Don't let your hard work go to waste. I've tried both latching and the Nappylocs tool and I prefer the latchhook. But you have to use what feels comfortable for you, so try them both and decide.

Thanks Brends I actually bought a latch hook and all I could do is look at it wondering how in the heck do you use it. I actually have the comcept of latching (with my hands) just don't know how to use the tool but I think the nappylocks tool will be easier but I will attempt to give both of them a try!
